AM: what it is and where to find it on the bands
AM, amplitude modulation: the original voice mode, kept alive by operators who love its sound.
AM transmits a carrier and both sidebands. It is wider and less efficient than SSB, and it sounds like broadcast radio, which is part of its charm.
It survives on a few agreed frequencies, often with restored valve equipment, and in some aviation and military-surplus nets.
AM spots are rare on the clusters: when one appears, it is usually an event worth listening to.
