Australia spans CQ zones 29, 30 and ITU zones 55, 58, 59, and a call keeps its area when its holder moves: ask the station for its zone.

How call areas work in Australia

In Australia the digit is the state or territory: VK1 the Australian Capital Territory, VK2 New South Wales, VK3 Victoria, VK4 Queensland, VK5 South Australia, VK6 Western Australia, VK7 Tasmania and VK8 the Northern Territory. The VI, VJ, VL and AX series appear on the same digits, mostly for special events.

VK9 and VK0 are the external territories, most of them separate DXCC entities: Lord Howe, Norfolk, Christmas, Cocos (Keeling) and Willis islands, Macquarie, Heard Island. The mainland spans CQ zones 29 and 30 and ITU zones 55, 58 and 59.

Portable and moved stations

Operators away from home often add a suffix such as /P or the number of the area they are in, and many keep a VK3 call after moving. For awards the place of operation counts, so the prefix is a strong hint, not proof.
