VE1: Nova Scotia
Callsigns beginning with VE1 were issued in Nova Scotia, in Canada. The same area appears in the series VA1.
Call area
Canada spans CQ zones 1, 2, 4, 5 and ITU zones 2, 3, 4, 9, 75, and a call keeps its area when its holder moves: ask the station for its zone.
How call areas work in Canada
In Canada the prefix names the province or territory: VE1 Nova Scotia, VE2 Quebec, VE3 Ontario, VE4 Manitoba, VE5 Saskatchewan, VE6 Alberta and VE7 British Columbia, with VA1 to VA7 on the same digits. VE8 is the Northwest Territories, VE9 New Brunswick, VO1 Newfoundland and VO2 Labrador, VY0 Nunavut, VY1 Yukon and VY2 Prince Edward Island.
Special-event stations use other Canadian series on the same digits, such as CF, CG, VC or XM. Sable Island (CY0) and St. Paul Island (CY9) are separate DXCC entities, and the country spans several CQ and ITU zones.
Portable and moved stations
Operators away from home often add a suffix such as /P or the number of the area they are in, and many keep a VE1 call after moving. For awards the place of operation counts, so the prefix is a strong hint, not proof.
