How call areas work in Brazil

In Brazil the digit is a region and the letter pair a state: PY2 is São Paulo, PP5 Santa Catarina, PT7 Ceará. PY covers the main state of each digit, and PP, PQ, PR, PS, PT, PV and PW the others; PU is the novice class on the same digits as PY.

Fernando de Noronha (PY0F), St. Peter and St. Paul Rocks (PY0S) and Trindade and Martim Vaz (PY0T) are separate DXCC entities. ANATEL does not publish a current table, so the secondary pairs are indicative. Brazil spans ITU zones 12, 13 and 15.

Portable and moved stations

Operators away from home often add a suffix such as /P or the number of the area they are in, and many keep a PP1 call after moving. For awards the place of operation counts, so the prefix is a strong hint, not proof.
